I read this 20 years ago or more and I remember it being better, but maybe that was just me stuck on pagers and landlines (the original copyright is 1993) and the fact that the vampire genre has become more risqué. I’m sure this was v controversial 31 years ago but right now it’s just meh.

I mean the world is interesting but it felt rushed? unfinished? I actually had to pause the book when I first started reading it cause I thought it was starting off from a cliffhanger from another book
the fmc that I can't remember the name of is okay at best n chuckle worthy at minimum but I just don't think she's a strong female lead. and her powers are like never fully explained?? even more than halfway through the book its not explained??
I thought that i was gonna pick up the next book in the series cause the first half of this book was intriguing but then characters just kept being introduced without any context and I was just lost

This book...well, it wasn't what I was hoping it would be at all. I heard from some other vampire book fans that this was a good series to get into if you like vampire stories.

However, this book was very much boring for most of it. The only reason I actually sort of liked it was because I liked Edward's character at the end. I didn't really like Jean-Claude, or any of the other characters. I'm not so sure about Anita. Sometimes I liked her witty sarcastic comments, but there was also something I didn't quite like, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Maybe too much arrogance?

My other major problem with this book was that the imagery was terrible. For example, when she's in the dungeon with the wererats. It is SO HARD to imagine what Hamilton is describing. It's not done very well at all. It almost creates a blurry picture that is somewhat there, but then she'll say something that will make you realize you're imagining it all wrong; like the people in your mind were not in the place she was telling you they were, or they were actually kneeling and you pictured them standing up, or something like that. It was basically just very poorly described.

I didn't really understand at all what Guilty Pleasures was. Was it a strip joint or a place to watch people get bit or to have your mind taken over by a vampire, or what? I didn't get that at all.

I also didn't get the picture of how exactly you become a vampire. Not with a bite, but how? It's weird.

So that is my major problems with the book. The descriptions are so hard to follow, it's not very fun to read in that sense.

When Edward popped up at the end, I really liked his character. I'm not sure why, but I think he complimented Anita's character really well. I hope he's in the future books

I was also disappointed that there was ZERO romance in this book. I heard that there was romance in these books, but none so far.

Although I only gave this two stars, I hear they get better. So I think I'll still try to keep reading these to see if they get any better. We'll see how I feel after the next one, if I want to keep reading or not.

It was written in the ‘90s and felt dated like an old episode of Law & Order. Mystery kept me guessing.
