I almost gave this 3 full stars but couldn't.  Some of the information is good but some is outdated (like letting infants cry themselves to sleep).  I'd originally bought this book in the hopes of giving a friend a guide to her toddler's stages but it is woefully inadequate.   The stages are not differentiated with any kind of clear understanding.  The first part of every section is in the form of a fictional letter from a parent which might have been valuable if the real-estate in a book of only 220 pages wasn't held at such a premium.  Especially considering the entire span of ages is broken into 'birth to 18 months', '18m to 36m', '36m to the 6th bday', and then '6 to 9 years'.  Anyone who has studied child development knows that there are far too many stages in just the first 3 years to group them this way.
I wouldn't even call this a starter book.  I'd avoid it completely.
Unfortunately, there are few books for parents that are quick reference to ages and stages.
