I love the anime based off this manga—the music is so goooooood—and the manga brought a bit of that nostalgic joy back. It’s such a weird series: eerie-but-wholesome, full of thoughtful but ominous storytelling and silly but endearing characters. I love the juxtaposition of wackiness, horror and serious moral reflection. It’s Japanese genre-bending at its best.
I do think the anime is a wee bit better: it fleshes out some things nicely, has better transitions, and eschews the random pop-up characters from other CLAMP series. Overall, though, I really enjoyed reading this and have put the next two volumes on hold at the library.
