OMG I seriously really enjoyed this book, the world building, how things work, the characters SO GOOD. I really loved the characters, even though I think that Zetian is low-key going too far sometimes but I still love her. I really liked seeing how Zetian and Shimin bonded and seeing how Shimin slowly started falling for Zetian. I also liked seeing Yizhi and Zetian together like Yizhi is SO sweet!!  The magic(?) system was really well built and unique like DAMN. I really liked that there was Yin and Yang and all the different types and the mechas are so cool. I was so entertained reading this book and the world is literally so interesting. I really liked the build up and introduction of the world and its characters and I will be reading the next book. Also all 3 of them were so badass in the end love love!

I don’t understand why people love this book so much. As far as YA fantasy goes, there is so much more well written books out there - with loveable characters.

This is a book about an angry girl killing everoyne who opposes her whilst discovering ”feminism”. Authour does a poor job convincing anyone this is based on any sort of  feminist theory.

Finishing the book angry, this was so bad.

For someone who is endlessly tired of the standard YA fantasy/sci fi tropes particularly gender and sexuality and wants an author who turns them all on their head this is for you

i had a hard time deciding on a rating for this book. i think the plot is incredibly unique and interesting, but i found the writing lacking. ultimately, the story was intriguing enough for me to move past the writing, but i do think it could’ve been so much better if the author had a little more subtlety/finesse when tackling the very important message they conveyed in this novel. i will definitely be reading the sequel though and i look forward to, hopefully, a more mature writing style!

HUH????????????????????
I-
Review to come later.

ETA: Okay, I'm back. This was... it was a ride I'll say that for sure. The biggest con for me was that Zetian was very annoying in a "I just learned Feminism 101 and now I'm preaching" way. Her anger reminded me of Rin from The Poppy War somewhat. Not sure if it's a character thing or a writing thing. Might be both. Having just finished She Who Became The Sun, it's funny that they had somewhat of the same ending/story and yet I liked that one way more.

Pros: The way that Zetian, Yizhi AND Shimin said traumatize your family back >>>> what icons, what legends. Also, bi quock OT3, IKTR. And the biggest thing: ALIENS! What am I gonna do? Say no?
