Damn, Uzodinma Iweala sure knows how to write sad stuff. As with Beasts of No Nation, it's hard for me to say that I "liked" the book or that I would recommend it because the content is so upsetting. I will say that it was beautifully written, though.

This book is heartbreaking. I was so so SO shocked at the murder of Niru. It was so unexpected. This book was a challenging read as it covered homophobia, familial rejection, teenage angst, not measuring up to family expectations, first relationships and sex. It also covers the black immigrant experience and religion. I really liked part one following Niru. And then part 2 by Meredith I hated! But I assume that is the point. Her selfish self-centred “victimhood”, her white “fragility” that led to the MURDER OF HER FRIEND BY THE POLICE. Her thoughtless attempts to assuage her own guilt by showing up at the grieving family’s home, her unwillingness to do the BARE MINIMUM to clear her friends’ name. This book made me so mad. It is a reminder of white privilege and the dangers that an unwillingness to recognise that privilege can cause. A difficult sobering read because this is sadly a reflection of the current world.

There are a lot of elements of this book that I really liked. I remember liking the writing and just following Niru through his life, friendships, and him exploring his sexuality. This book was extremely heartbreaking, but also I feel like the ending felt a little forced. I know the point is to be frustrated by Meredith's lack of action at then end of the book, but it was also just confusing and didn't really make any sense because she and Niru did have a strong friendship.
