Slow to start but eventually very engaging sci-fi, political/combat thriller. Excited for the next one, but it will be tough for a lot of students to get into.

This book is amazingly well written. The world building was exciting and the action was well described to the point it was almost cinematic. I enjoyed the morally grey nature of the main protagonist and the setting in general, no individual is purely good or purely evil and there is great depth and character to even small side characters. The climax of the book was just a barrage of intense chills and goosebumps.

I love that this MC, Talin is mute. While I think it’s very unfortunate but I do like this new angle.
There’s a lot of used tropes but taken like cotton candy after the humidity gets to it. The taste is there but with a different texture more solid and firm as the pages go by.
If you read this I advice taking it slow. That way you get more attached to the characters with a stronger lasting relationship that wouldn’t build if you sped through it. Which you definitely can. It’s not dense. Just a lot of reflection. Internal and external. It makes sense though. Because she’s mute. So thoughts are pretty much the only thing you can do. But at least she can sign. So there’s that. But not many understand. And of course it’s not the same as speaking.
