I enjoyed this book for the most part. I liked the characters and the setting.

I found it to be a little long-winded at times and I'm not sure what I expected at the end of the story, but I guess I was just hoping for something more... There was such a build-up to how everything would turn out, but it just seemed to be much less than it could have been in my opinion. But all in all it was still a pretty good story.

As soon as I started reading this book, I had a feeling that I am bound to be disappointed in the end. I was. Maybe I don't get the book, maybe I wanted it to be a bit simpler. The story tried to show the character of Margo being too complicated and too deep almost driven by existential philosophies but it turns out that it didn't portray her well. She was a huge disappointment. I am probably more disappointed than Q himself.

I liked the adventure in the book but many things seemed cliched. Same as any teenage drama. So nothing exciting there. The road-trip was fun. I enjoyed it a lot. Those 21 hours and that's all. The build up of the suspense and mystery around Margo was good overall. There are philosophies outlined in the book that I liked - the parts about Whitman's poem, perception of others through us etc. But in the end, I don't think I take anything from this book worth holding on to. It is equivalent to a pizza, enjoy it with a can of cola and pray you don't get constipated.

If you like teenage drama, fast and easy read, you may like this book. Or on second thoughts just watch the movie (On a third one, don't. It's worse!). You might save a lot of time which you can invest on something better.

This is the story of teenage boy Quentin and his discovery that sometimes you think you know someone, but you really only know a false version of them: a paper version. I couldn't put this down because I got so intrigued by the whole story. I really wanted to know: who really is Margo? John Green sort of has a habit of making teen characters that are unrealistically deep and mature for their age... which can get a little annoying (hence the three stars). But overall this was a good read and it really drew me in: I panicked, I laughed, I really felt emotions while reading; something a lot of books fail at doing. I was disappointed by the ending, but I guess that might have been intentional from John Green because it's how his main characters end up feeling too.

This book will be in my top 10 for the year.

Just as the car in the book runs off of hope, this story is driven by hope.

This is not your normal mystery novel.

After Margo Roth Spiegelman (I love the repetitive use of her full name) convinces Quentin into a nite of mild revenge, some breaking, some entering, but no breaking and entering, Margo goes missing. Possibly she has run away again, but there is evidence she might have committed suicide. Quentin, his friends, and one of Margo friends try to find if she is still alive by following the clues she has left.

While prom and graduation (which is approaching) is filled with hope, the Paper Towns, fake towns on maps (explained in the book) and abandoned, unfinished subdivisions, which Margo Roth Spiegelman is fascinated with, is devoid of hope.

This is book is also about truly understanding people for who they are vs how we invent identities for those around us, especially those we revere from afar. It is about fake vs real.

I am not great at remembering or keeping quotes. I just tend to remember the message or sentiment. These may not be quite accurate, but they stuck out to me.

"Would it be different if the people or the place was different"
"They couldn't be. They are connected"

"The paper town might not be real, but the memories are"

"I'm not saying everything is survivable. Just everything except the last thing"

You also get a great lesson into Walt Whitman's poem "Leaves of Grass"

Another point I enjoyed in this book. Arriving is never as fun as the trip. That doing something never lives up to the expectations. The planning and the anticipation is more enjoyable than the actual thing.

This books is not rated overwhelmingly high on goodreads, so I get the majority will not love this book as much as I did. It just felt so real to me.

I also loved how Quentin did not hold information from his parents or the cops. Always bugs me in mystery and suspense books.

I enjoyed most of the book and I was extremely excited until about 3/4 of the book and I got tired and started skimming.
Honestly, I was skimming about the last 10 pages. lol

I liked it better than Looking For Alaska nonetheless. I would recommend this book to someone else as long as they plan on paying total attention at the very end.
