This is another absolutely fantastic performance by Andy Serkis—a must-listen for any Tolkien fan.

The beginning of Book 4 of Lord of the Rings ("The Taming of Sméagol", "The Passage of the Marshes", and "The Black Gate is Closed") are probably some of the most depressing and long passages in the entire LotR—every time someone complains about how they couldn't get through with all the walking, I assume they're probably talking about these long chapters. However, Andy Serkis's performance makes them an absolute delight—he fully inhabits Gollum (and Sméagol) in a way that brings new nuance to the character. I've felt more sympathetic to Bilbo's pity of Gollum in this read through than I have in ones prior.

Onward to The Return of the King!

Nothing like a long road trip for a long audiobook. It’s such a beautiful story and it has been a while since I read the Two Towers. Andy Serkis’s voice is still phenomenal and I can’t imagine anybody else being Gollum any more.
