Surreal story that at times felt more like a debate or lecture.

Reeling from the recent death of his grandfather, Rintaro Natsuki feels even more withdrawn and adrift from the world. He just wants to hide in his grandfather’s used bookstore, until a talking cat comes through the door and asks for his help. Now he joins the feline on a series of quests to save books from different people who want to lock them away or unwittingly destroy them. Along the way he remembers why he himself loves books.
This was a charming short novel, that really is a love letter to books. Through the three tests the protagonist faces, he explores why books are important to people, and why it’s important for people to read. It’s also very Japanese with its idea of hikikomori and obligations to family and classmates. Very cute overall.

This story felt like contentment. A book about books, it dealt with the very modernization of reading, the over-consumption and materialism of books spearheaded by things like booktok, and the capitalistic ideal that only bestsellers are worth printing. It was a simple read, less than a day, but I find myself very pleased with how this played out.

Charming short novel, like Narnia with a bookshop and a talking cat.

A short but beautiful little novel that reminds us of the power of books.

80/100.
