Can we please get more books narrated by weird old women??? Because of this type of main character, I don't think I've ever read a book quite like this. I'll admit, it did seem kind of slow to me in some parts but, even at these sections, just like with Duszejko's love of astrology, paying attention to the tiniest details is key to figuring out what's going on. I definitely had my suspicions as the book progressed, but I was still glued to the page when everything was revealed.

What a delightfully weird book. One of the most unique narrators I've ever read.

This is technically a thriller I guess, since it includes a murder mystery, but I'm not sure if it would appeal to general thriller enjoyers as the pacing is actually quite slow and we spend a lot of time in our main character's head than actually in the action. I loved the unreliable narrator and the fact that she's a different type of main character for a thriller read. She's not a cop, or a PI, or even anyone that matters to the investigation. She's just a "normal" (she's actually incredibly odd) person who just finds herself in the middle of a string of murders in a small Polish town. I super enjoyed how she makes you question your own judgment. It felt a bit like a noir film with her unique perspective on the world and the way she constantly narrates the most mundane, seemingly irrelevant things.

For a while we spent so long in the main character's narration that I wondered what was going to happen and where the story was going. But the ending picks up quite a bit and I found it super satisfying and fun.

It reminds me of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time: quirky, introspective, dark.

I took my time with reading it so I feel like I can't appreciate it fully because I forgot the details. I adored the protagonist and her relationships, a little kooky but in a charming way. It feels like the book is not really even about the murders, since there's not much said about them, but just the meditative flow of thoughts was nice to read. Excellent writing and translation.

Mon livre préféré de 2023 je pense. Un million de cœurs sur Janina Doucheyko. J'espère devenir une vieille comme elle  (à quelques détails près...)

I really loved this book and honestly was such a mysterious and well written plot line. There is a morally ambiguous narrator and there are so many different themes in the book which are explored. The author has evidently taken care to do a lot of the research into the astrology and other medical content in the book because they are written in much depth. I thought the ending was completely unexpected and gave me tingles when I found out what had happened.

This was definitely a weird one for me. It was recommended to me because the old woman is a curmudgeon which is true and I do technically love a curmudgeon. But I’m thinking maybe it just didn’t translate for me into English from Czech? The old woman’s eccentricities I think were what ended up kind of putting me off the book. Her belief in astrology and palm reading and such were just too out there for me. But she does get sweet vengeance in the end so I’m glad I finished it and didn’t just give up on it. But definitely only recommending to friends who love Czech literature and astrology 😝
