Merry Christmas, Little Elliot by Mike Curato

I liked this a lot. More than I expected for a seasonal holiday book because those are not my favorite. When Little Elliot asks Santa for the Christmas Spirit, Santa tells him that he has to find it on his own. So Little Elliot and Mouse start looking. But it turns out Christmas Spirit is hard to find--even in some of the obvious places in NYC. When a letter to Santa gets waylaid, Elliot and Mouse have to work together to deliver it. The end is a little abrupt--almost like it missed a beat or a page spread--but the story is charming and has the same rich artwork and 1940s vibe as Curato's other books in this series. A fun addition even if the resolution might feel a bit familiar from readers of the first book in the series.

All of the "Little Elliot" books have a timeless feel to them and I love that Curato has given us a timeless holiday classic with this next installment in the series.

The pictures are what make this book a 5 star read for me. This story was the weakest of all the books in the series but I still enjoyed reading it. I'm excited to show this to my nephews and niece so I hope they love it as much as I did!

Mouse is excited for Christmas, but Little Elliot isn't feeling the Christmas spirit. He asks Santa for some help, but is told he'll have to find some spirit on his own. The two friends watch the Nutcracker, visit the tree in Rockefeller Center, and go sledding in Central Park, but Elliot still can't get in the Christmas mood. Then he finds a letter to Santa from a little girl and knows exactly how to spend the holiday. This is a sweet story about friendship, Christmas, and the true meaning of the holiday season that will tug at the heartstrings of both young and old readers. A delightful addition to any elementary collection.
