In this fifth Joe Picket book he leaves his own station of Saddlestring to substitute a game warden in Jackson WY. Soon it turns out that the previous Jackson game warden, thought to have commited suicide, knew something more and hidden about a multimillion building project that he should have. Although I missed the chemistry between Joe and his wife and daughters in this one, these Pickett novels really are well constructed and just enough easy-to-read to keep you hooked up to the story. Marybeth, Sheridan and Lucy are in this one but only in a small role through Nate the falconer.

My favorite Joe Pickett so far! (Although I’m reading them out of order, when they become available at my library.) Joe Pickett goes to the big city (ie Jackson Hole, WY) and, shockingly, once again gets involved in a possible murder involving big game! The mystery is not quite as good, but I like the pacing and the new characters in this one a lot. Probably should have read #4 first, since there are a ton of references to it, but I got along okay without it.

I've enjoyed all the Joe Pickett novels...a REALLY nice guy who stumbles into all these bad situations and bad characters when all he really wants to do is catch poachers and go home at night to his family. And he's a lousy shot as well. At times Joe Pickett almost seems bewildered by the nasty people and corrupt bureaucrats around him. A refreshing change from the hard-core, know-it-all detectives and private eyes one encounters in this genre. I also enjoy his long-suffering wife and feisty kids! Loved the twists and turns in this book.

This book hit the ground running and didn't let up! I loved every second of it. I think this one was my favorite so far. Can't wait to read book #6!
