The Retribution of Mara Dyer, by Michelle Hodkin

Okay so maybe I just wasn’t focusing on what I was reading, but this whole series ended up confusing me. Like wait what, don’t be throwing Jungian archetypes at me out of nowhere along with a genetic mutation. That makes no sense to me. I get that genetic mutation = superpowers, but I have a really hard time getting out of my social work/psychology background & training brain as soon as psych theories like Jung are brought into the mix.

This whole book was also annoying. It was Mara does this, Mara does that, Mara whines, Mara is unstable, Mara misses Noah, Mara wants to have sex with Noah, Mara has nightmares, Mara kills people (and enjoys it), Mara wonders why people think she’s unstable, Mara scares her friends, Mara whines about being unstable...

The pregnancy “scare” was random and weird and the following scene of her cutting those... whatever they were?? Out of her abdomen?? Like wait what? That was also never really explained except as a way to keep Mara from “manifesting.” Which was also never fully explained along with the jumbo of genetic mutation and genetic memories and archetypes.

It honestly felt like Hodkin got to a point with the superhero notion and then wanted to turn it into something more “scientifically based” but was unable to do so successfully. At least for someone who (as aforementioned) is a social worker with a psych background AND who has a biochemist for a father and an ecologist for a sister (so I am also more familiar with genetics & related topics than the average joe).

The segments with Mara’s grandmother (??) were also weird and took far too long to explain. Idk maybe this all comes down to me not concentrating enough, that’s entirely possible, but I don’t think so. Not quite anyway, not ALL of it. This book just felt like a very messy conclusion that lacked the zing of the first two books. It also took me weeks to finish it, so that could also be why it didn’t feel anywhere near as cohesive (or intriguing) as the other books did.

Such a brilliant series! Loved every minute of it, never read a series like it at all and very much doubt I will again! Definitely something that deserves a re-read some point in the near future...

So so so good! Scared the freakin' glitter out of me but, I loved it! Pages 444 through 458 will make you see
SpoilerYA sex scenes in a different light.
Ms. Hodkin's game is right up there with Mrs. Mafi's. This series is worth reading people.

I really liked this ending to the Mara Dyer trilogy. All my questions were answered and I thought the last few chapters were perfect. I didn't feel that Noah was "missing" from it - I thought that Mara and Noah's story progressed exactly as it should've. Overall I found it a little draggy at some points but I can't think of much I didn't like about it.

Fascinating trilogy, with a fabulous close. Many questions are answered after finishing The Retribution of Mara Dyer, but there is so much more than what you think. There are questions answered that you didn't even know needed to be asked.
Mara is being held at Horizons, the treatment center. She has no idea how long she's been there, or what they're doing to her. The amount of drugs they are giving her should be lethal. There are drugs that force her to forget about the experiments they perform, others that make it impossible to move her body or react in anyway. The days and the details are fuzzy, but that doesn't stop her from wanting to escape. Help comes in the least likely of people, and Mara is unsure if it's a smart decision to accept. She knows that Noah is still alive, despite what she has been told. Getting out, by whatever means necessary is the only way to find him.
