I appreciated the candid descriptions of death that we’re so often shielded from. This was informative, interesting, and at times surprisingly funny.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes is a dark and unconventional memoir written by Caitlin Doughty that tells her experiences of working in a crematory and pursuing a career in mortician work. I LOVED this book! Definitely expect deep insight into the world of death and taboo topics surrounding it, but that you'll also begin to reflect on your own beliefs of the afterlife. Doughty taught me so much through this memoir and I would highly recommend checking this book out.

This was really a fascinating look into the death industry, and encourages you to think about how we view death.

This memoir is bursting full of morbid humor and ruminations on death and the U.S's lack of meaningful rituals surrounding it. What the book lacks is educational depth. Many many topics are touched on very briefly and abandoned within a few sentences. It's entertaining but doesn't go far beyond that. If you're looking for a detailed account of mortuary science I would look elsewhere. If you want a brief overview of the life of a witty mortician trying to figure out her purpose and aspirations, this is worth a read.
