This was an overnight read, but not for lack of substance... I keep thinking, she's writing too fast now, I can expect a little less. But every single time, I'm yanked back in. Give me a little time with my head above water, and I'll give you more.

It is hard to believe that Pirate King and Garment of Shadows are written by the same author! (Pirate King is pure fluff.) The historical detail and complexities of this newest novel kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat the whole time.
I love it when I learn something entirely new. I had no idea that Muslims had such a problems with dogs. Doing a little research I discovered that traditionally Muslims would never keep a dog as a pet because they are considered ...

Not one of her best; maybe I was in a bad mood, but the book seemed to drag on and on; hopefully the next installment will be more engaging

I wish what was explained in the final chapters had been in the earlier part of the book. The moral and ethical dilemmas were also saved to the end without seeing the characters wrestle through them. Although that would have been difficult since the novel is told from only 2 points of view. I am glad that King brought back Mahmoud and Ali, 2 of my favorite characters.

I love this series but wasn't a fan of the last few books, so I really enjoyed this return to the Russell/Holmes I'd been missing. A good story with just the right amount of humor and history.

Now I want to reread all of King's books. I love the recurrence of characters and settings and the fact that her plotlines remain fresh. Not only that, I see there is a whole cultural history I have yet to explore. Life is too short.

SO much better than the Pirate King - a refreshing return to a far less stuffy and self-important Russell.

Another complex, enjoyable read.
Mary Russel’s intelligence and skill means that she both gets into interesting trouble, but more importantly is able to rescue herself (mostly).
Another complex and detailed adventure, with great plot and characters. Recommended.

Overall, despite a reunion with two of my favorite side characters, this installment of Mary Russell's adventures was just not my favorite. Too much talking and explaining and too little doing. Still, in most cases, a three star Mary Russell story is better than a four star story about somebody else.
