I downloaded this on Kindle Unlimited.
Rani is a widow at 17 years, married to a sadistic man, she never shed tears when pirates attacked Orec and killed him. When he died she lost her status and now is a servant of Orec. But she has a secret about that fatal night.
Whilst reading this book, I felt as I was missing something, whilst the disaster was mentioned, There was no details about it. I wanted to know more about the different islands and what part they played in the building of Orec. Set in a dystopian world everyone was happy and there was not much suffering mentioned. However I enjoyed reading about the traditions they had and the reasons behind them. When Rani lost her husband she had to have a hair shaved as it grew, her grief should get less. There was a few characters that I want to know more about and Nanny Grace sounds like a right old woman who would have quite a few stories to tell.
This is a quick read and I had ended it before I knew. Looking on Amazon I cannot see any more in this series yet and whilst the story did not end on a cliffhanger, it did leave some questions.

I did enjoy the story but I felt it lacked some world building. I had to go and read the blurb which had more details than the book. A world in the future where rules are harsh especially for women. Rani is a young, naive girl of only seventeen and already widowed. After a pirate attack which killed her husband she was attacked and now must hide her pregnancy. This is her journey in this Dystopian world, not much action but it coasts along and I enjoyed it.

5 stars!
Loved this story! Very different and interesting! The world the author created will pull you into the story right away. All the characters are very likable even Shona who was the one pregnant not so very nice lady, but underneath what she showed you could see the nice person. Even though Rani is super young and shy she was also strong when it came down to it, she did what needed to be done to keep herself and the baby alive. I really liked how the author ended the story and would love to read some more, maybe a story of her falling in love, maybe a shocker with the pirate coming back? or maybe even a story about Dais all grown up... Oh the possibilities!
Well written and you will read it in one sitting.
