(this for 3&4 cause I read them back to back)
-Didn't get feral Twinkizaki Tanizaki in action but he was definitely saying some offhand shit; a win is a win 🙏🏼
-The ONLY qualm I have with this is the big fight between Atsushi and Aktugawa, I was glazing over all those pages fr, hard to decipher what was happening, but overall I loved the artstyle and hwo well it fit the vibe of the AU. OK and maybe the lack of Chuuya was disappointing.
-Now, for the Oda and Dazai content,
how many times and in how many different ways will Asagiri hurt me with them 😭 First off, the way Dazai got sooo excited and happy and adorable, looking 16 again when he met up with Oda?? "Odasaku!!! 💖😊 Wanna hear a funny story?...And I wanted to tell you about it so much! 🥰 " BRUH his ass KNOWS this Oda doesn't even know him at all, doesn't recognize him or the nickname, and he STILL acted like this 😭 but of course he did. how could he not? that's the only person who's ever loved, cared for, and understood him I-and then to immediately get hit with AU Oda's response to this, which is to draw a gun on Dazai? Dazai's expression here had me on the floor he was in so much pain
"I invited you here...to say my final farewell. If you have someone you need to say good-bye to, you've lived a good life. And a good-bye that makes you lament from the bottom of your heart...is more than you could ever ask for." ASAGIRI FIX IT RN. And was that chapter start artwork Oda with Dazai's BANDAGES whipping around in the wind as he looks forlornly at where they're tangled around his hand?!?! I mean, this image alone is enough to push a bitch off the deep end. But Asagiri isn't done here <3. There's some more heavy hitters such as "Don't call me Odasaku," "It truly was difficult for me," Dazai's expression when Oda points a gun at him (pt. 2), "Please don't shoot me in this bar" with his world's 16 yo him and Ango as phantoms in the background, & the "Goodbye...Odasaku" full page spread...
And finally, as if there wasn't enough tearjerking, we arrive Dazai revealing his whole plan (in which he suffered), why this particular AU stood out from the others...was because "...this is the only world where he's alive and writing a novel. I can't let that world be wiped away...But I do have one regret, Odasaku. I won't be able to read that novel you'll complete one day. That's the one thing that vexes me a little." I'm sorry? You about to kill yourself and that's the one thing!?!? the only world where Oda is alive and writing his book is one where Dazai is a stranger, an antagonistic force to him? this is truly the most painful way this could've turned out. why. Asagiri what happened to you that you would even conceive this.
In conclusion. I'll have to re-read Side B of "The Day I Picked Up Dazai" now that I've got the background, for maximum suffering!! I love Oda and Dazai, and hey, at least Side A exists. I hate that it seems Dazai has to grieve in silence (I mean, he lost Ango too, just in a different way.), even if Oda haunting the narrative always gets me. Them >>>

While the final volume of a one off story should be there to neatly tie things up a fair amount, there are still a lot of questions left unanswered and an abundance of questionable writing choices being made that keep the ending from being at all satisfying for me. Its quite disappointing to admit that since I did enjoy a fair amount of this manga and felt it was very promising. Most of the volume was Akutagawa and Atsushi's fight, which after a while felt redundant, and Dazai explaining the lore and world building to us, which, while a bit clumsy at times, was probably the most interesting part of the volume.

I do still think the overall story holds up decently well and slightly better than the main manga, however I do think that if Bsd Beast continued any longer than these 4 volumes, it would eventually unravel in the same way as the main manga as many of the flaws in the main manga still manage to surface in the final volume of Bsd Beast (and also as early as volume 2).

There were aspects of this volume that I enjoyed, namely Dazai's meeting with Oda, the reveal of his motives as well as the explaination for this world's existence, and parts of his final interaction with Akutagawa and Atsushi, but even those felt hallow by the end. This is due to the epilogue feeling pretty directionless and failing to follow up with any of the implications that were brought up in the final volume. It did not seem to imply anything interesting happening in the future or successfully give any closure to the overall story.

This was the best book that I’ve ever read and I’m never going to read it again

The finale fight between our favorite pair was just magnificent and if it was to be animated it will be unbelievable. I have noticed that I look for misery with a tweezer. I just wasn’t expecting anything from the last volume —other than just pain of course— so like what I received was just..

Please just go read Beast and urge others to go and pick Beast because the author might have just went on and beyond our reason and expectations.. I just want to re- read this already.

Damn you Asagiri. You ruined my life completely, therefore I am utterly miserable. You gave us what the fans during season 2 wanted:
Odasaku being alive and well to finish his novel
. However, that didn’t come without consequences, which is also my doom:
Dazai, too, got what he wanted; his death, but couldn’t live accompanied with his friend
.

Asagiri, you’re a mastermind, yet I wish you could let us fans (more importantly, your characters) be happy.

PS: also, where the hell was Ango??? I really thought he would make his appearance here, shame.
