I grew up reading Sally Odgers' YA books, so when I spotted this on Satalyte Publishing's table at this year's Continuum I had to snaffle a copy. It's taken me some months to get to it (I bought a lot of books), but now I have I wish I'd read it sooner so I could be re-reading it now.

One of the things I loved best about books like Amy Amaryllis and Shadowdancers was the strong sense of place. Since those were split between Australia and otherworldy realms, it makes sense that Heather and Heath, set in Odgers' home state of Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land), has an even stronger sense of place that comes through extremely clearly.

The other thing I loved best about Odgers' YA books were her strong female characters, and they exist again in Heather and Heath -- garbed in garments of an older time and with a different set of life challenges to face; a little older (though not by much in at least one case!), and with their own unique wisdoms.
