In this installment of Elephant and Piggie, Elephant and Piggie decide to surprise each other after seeing some squirrels do it. They get more than they bargained for. This is a fun book about the unexpected.

When you’re stuck in a library with your students with nothing to do while they test, you read short books.

Do easy readers get any better than the Elephant and Piggie books? The expressions are incredible! And such authentic emotions in such spare text and illustrations. Plus they are simply hilarious. Excellent choices for those just beginning to read.

My favorite Elephant & Piggie yet! Not just because it was read to me by my two favorite humans, now both readers.

I read this book today with one of the kids at work. It's actually kind of hilarious. The drawings are pretty funny. The story can be used to help students with basic emotion identification (surprised, worried, happy). It can also be used to help children with basic reasoning skills (What is wrong with the plan that elephant & piggie come up with? Why can't elephant and piggie find each other by the rock?). Overall, it can be a pretty good tool for elementary school kids and it's entertaining for the adult reading it as well.

Elephant and Piggie witness two squirrel buddies having the time of their lives by jumping out from behind a rock and surprising each other. It looks like such fun, that Elephant and Piggie decide to play the same game. It’s no surprise that their game plan goes awry and Elephant imagines that some disaster has befallen Piggie, while Piggie assumes that Gerald has gone for lunch. When they finally find each other again they are so surprised, they decide it’s better to play a different game.

Before I start reviewing, I’ll admit that I’m hopelessly fond of the Elephant and Piggie books. In general, they are simple, silly and fun. This one is no exception. I was kept in suspense as Elephant and Piggie look for each other, and had I been six, I would have fallen on the floor laughing when they finally find each other again. The illustrations are simply colored line drawings and the text is made up entirely of dialogue. These simple stories are great for acting out and are sure to put a smile on your face.

After witnessing a game of "Surprise", Gerald and Piggie attempt to play it as well...but they both hide behind the same rock for the other to walk past. After worrying and thinking, they do end up surprising each other.

Another solid entry in the Elephant and Piggie canon. I can't get over the expressions Willems manages to get on Gerald and Piggie, and Mini-Me had so much fun reading it the first time, we immediately had to start over again.
