While this is a reread for me, it has been so so long that it felt like I was reading this collection for the first time.

I liked that some of the stories were ones that I remembered from my childhood as ones that people would tell their friends or younger siblings.

I did think that most of them could have been developed a bit better. They were very short and sometimes too succinct.

Also, there is one story that could be very problematic now that we know not to take some stories from Native American culture.

Finally faced my childhood fear (of this cover) and it was…fine. The stories were pretty good, I liked seeing the sources behind them, especially since a lot of them are the sort of things you vaguely hear but don’t remember where. The illustrations, however? Still scary. Child me was right.

A must-read. A staple for all children's bookshelves.

Some silly, some unexpected, some an actual little jolt of fear. Fun that there’s instructions if you're narrating these to friends.

"In 1981 Alvin Schwartz saw the release of the first of his Scary Stories trilogy, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. The tales presented are very brief, and collected from various realms of folklore. Schwartz rewrote them, and Stephen Gammell adds illustrations that create an atmosphere and add depth to the reading experience. The first installment, like all the books in the trilogy, are beloved and well-remembered by people of my generation, 80s and early 90s kids. However, these books have become “banned” over the years, mainly at the public-school level. It was in elementary school when I first discovered these twisted tales with their haunted imagery..."
