Nothing terribly original in the plot lines, but I appreciated the diverse FMC, her story, and her independence. The MMC was a bit flat. Medium spice level.
Graphic: Sexism, Sexual content, Xenophobia, and Classism
Moderate: Animal cruelty and Cursing
Minor: Infertility, Violence, Grief, Death of parent, Pregnancy, Colonisation, and Injury/Injury detail

A galavanting talented woman navigating the world of regency as a widow falls into the embrace of a man (a duke!) to be wed to her step-daughter.
Leela is a wonderful sister/mother figure and will give up the man she’s come to love at the expense of them both. Elliot, usually poised, responsible and non-impulsive, fights the urge to be with the one woman he’s ever loved but risks his reputation and society’s scorn.
She tries to put him off as she has just a much to lose—the respect and love of her friend/step-daughter, acceptance of her background and family as she explores the culture her mother refused to acknowledge— but the pull proves to be too strong for them both.
There are a lot of big gestures and speeches; both MCs are stubborn and hurt each other out of anxiety and fear.
It’s an angsty, Bridgerton-esque, Jane Austen type romance and HEA.
