Well, this was... disappointing. I listened to the audio because I knew about the podcast element, and usually I enjoy that format for YA mysteries/thrillers. The plot got old for me after a while, and I never really felt attached to the characters, so I wasn't ever shocked or affected by the plot points or twists. Just overall very underwhelming.

I am SO conflicted about this one.

On the one hand, I LOVED 90% of it. I was utterly hooked from page one, finding myself thinking about it throughout the day and taking every opportunity I could to dive back into to story. The audiobook production was absolutely fantastic and I loved that the story kept me on my toes, not knowing which way things were going to go. The structure was fab, the podcast elements brilliant and I found both the setting and characters super intriguing. It was everything I want and love in a YA mystery/thriller and as someone who's been consistently let down by the genre, this gave me hope not to give up hope.

Then the ending happened.

I'm not saying it was a bad ending, it wasn't. It was fine. It made sense but it just felt... lacklustre? I felt like I'd read variations of it before. It just felt lacking in comparison to how brilliant the rest of the book had been.

However, despite its ending and considering I did LOVE pretty much the entirety of this book other than the conclusion, this is probably one of the best YA thrillers I've read in a long time. I would 100% recommend this, especially if you're new to the YA mystery/thriller genre and therefore possibly not quite so familiar with the way it wraps up.

3.5 stars! I love Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca and I can see the parallels. My biggest gripe was the pacing which was too slow for me. Also, I had expected more for the ending. However, the audiobook production was fantastic and I enjoyed listening to a full cast.
