The score is only as high as it is because of the hurricane plotline which was done brilliantly. As for the romance plot, however, I’m so sick of Meg’s version of romance at this point. She must have some sort of fetish for rude and controlling men because every male romantic lead in her books fits the bill, with the occasional one also being predators to boot. If it weren’t for them her books have a chance to be brilliant but seeing the protagonists pulled around and bossed around and having all their boundaries stomped by these jackasses is so exhausting. Meg Cabot learn to write a different male romantic lead challenge 202- oh shit she already lost, oh dear.

The pacing and focus of the book was odd. The insert made it seem like it the plot would be focused on the aftermath of the hurricane and saving the stranded pets which wasn’t really the case. In reality so much of it was spend with Bree in the lead up to it just being utterly unprepared.

This is more like 2 and a half stars for me. Cheesy, Hallmark movie-like, and has ridiculous moments that made me roll my eyes.

Bree comes across as VERY dense... Also, she's on a "mancation" and falls for the first guy she meets? "Sex is the last thing I was interested in" when she drools every time she sees the MMC...
The story is also very hard to believe. They were DIRECTLY hit by the worst hurricane EVER and there is little to no damage to there little town? Unlikely. Maybe I was swayed by everything that has happened recently, but maybe a hurricane is not the best setting for a romance? And the author basically says it's heroic to ignore a mandatory evacuation... That book gave me the icks, I almost don't want to read the rest of the series (but I have them all already, so...)

It’s been so long since I’ve read a Meg Cabot book, I really enjoyed being back in one of her worlds.

I loved the hurricane aspect of this book and seeing the build up and aftermath of the storm. As an animal lover, I loved Bree’s dedication to the animals left behind after the evacuation. It’s something so many people don’t think about when disaster strikes, so I loved the focus on helping the stranded pets.

While this book is a romance, and I did enjoy it, I didn’t feel the connection to Drew that I would’ve liked to. I can’t quite put my finger on why I wasn’t connected, but I think my rating definitely would’ve been higher if I had felt more of an attachment to him.

Some easy, breezy chick lit to get through the shit show of 2020...my brain can't handle much more emotion and sadness, so I decided to hide in some chick lit for a couple days. The problem with chick lit--- is often the story line is cringe-worthy and the writing is a mess. I have to say, this book was not too bad. Did I cringe? Of course. Was the story realistic? NO. But--- the writing did not kill me.
This is the story of a hurricane heading to Key West. People are evacuating, except (of course) Bree and the "unable to keep his shirt buttoned" well-off with a custom built house on th beach (rolling your eyes yet?) Drew. She is fine during the hurricane and then spends the days after running around the island feeding, helping and walking pets that were abandoned in the evacuation. All is perfect.
The story was definitely...a romance novel. Nothing surprising or unhappy. All is good and as much as these books rub me the wrong way sometimes....it is what I needed this week.

Read if you need a mini escape on a beach with a hunk and a cat.
