This book isn't really exciting, and it doesn't evoke much emotion in the reader. Being a series of short individual stories about people moving into Mars means it doesn't build up very well. However, each of these stories explores ideas on what it would mean to move into another world, sort of like a series of "what would happen if..."s.

My favorite parts would have to be the Black River, and of course, Usher II.

This book is a wonderful display of what the sci-fi genre is meant to be. Beautiful, poetic, fantastical verbiage with abstract scenery, and a true statement on our reality and the possibilities of our reality.

Super enjoyable! Thoughtful, clever, critical, sometimes funny, beautiful, and very quotable. Some of the chapters/short stories in this book are exceptional and could be read stand alone. A couple slow chapters but for the most part I was totally engrossed in this world.

'The Martians discovered the secret of lie among animals. The animal does not question life. It lives. Its very reason for living IS life; it enjoys and relishes life... Man had become too much man and not enough animal on Mars too. And the men of Mars realized that in order to survive they would have to forgo asking that one question any longer: Why live? Life was its own answer. Life was the propagation of more life and the living of as good a life as possible.'

A sci-fi classic - epic in scope and personal in execution. Many of the stories were familiar from other anthologies, but this is a great anthology (arrangement of flowers) in the truest sense of the word.
