This was a hard read. I understand that this was the point but it was only people who's lives are hard making each others' lives worse.

Short story collections are hard to rate...this gets 5 stars for Brokeback Mountain which I thought was by far the best story in the book, 4 for some of the other stories, and 3 for the rest.

Also, I seriously think it would kill Annie Proulx to write something that ended happy.

This collection didn't disappoint! My heart is in pieces after finishing the very famous story Brokeback Mountain which closes the collection, and I feel like I've been taken on a whirlwind of experiences that life in the American West has encompassed over many decades. Each story varies in terms of its prose, structure and focus, but grit and strife remain an undercurrent of all the stories despite Proulx's often lyrical writing. It really reminded me of a recent read, Train Dreams by Denis Johnson, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I think they both write character lead, reflective stories so absorbingly that it feels transportive. Being NOT from Wyoming, I did have to wrap my head around the language used at times but the effort of concentration is well payed off. Solid book of short stories.

"Only earth and sky matter. Only the endlessly repeated flood of morning light. You begin to see that God does not owe us much beyond that." (99)

Annie Proulx creates some very convincing characters and stories. Her descriptions and sentences often make me reread and analyze them, how amazing her metaphors and deep her imagery. She is an extremely talented writer.

All of these stories are steeped in Wyoming culture, life and lore. The collection starts out very strong, and ends even stronger, although somewhere in the middle (while toying with urban legends and different narrative mechanisms), she loses her way a little. All in all, these stories are surprising, touching, contemplative, and philosophical.

Favorites are the classic "Brokeback Mountain" (the only story I had previously read), "The Mud Below," "Pair a Spurs", "The Half-Skinned Steer" (one of John Updike's picks for best short stories of the century).

These stories are like Wyoming herself: "You don't leave until you have to." (190)
