I’ve been rereading a lot of books that I loved from my childhood/teenage years this year, and of course The Twilight Saga had to be included in that.

I’ll be honest, this series isn’t great. The writing isn’t the best, the characters have a tendency to be annoying, but there’s just something about it that is so entertaining, I can’t even begin to explain.

One thing I have to say is this is definitely my favourite of the books. It’s probably not a four star read, but to be honest, I didn’t want to put it down. The nostalgia was hitting me hard and I actually found myself really enjoying it…

Is this book worthy of four stars? Absolutely not. Do I care that I gave it four stars anyway? No, not really! 😂

I am pleased to have finally finished this chonker of a book, and the whole saga too, after starting Twilight a year ago! all that's left to read someday in the future is Life and Death. I liked reading Breaking Dawn and getting the extra details missing in the films, but i don't necessarily like it better than watching Breaking Dawn: Part 2, it's just different since you can finish the film in 2 hours and this book takes days to read. Breaking Dawn: Part 1 on the other hand, that I could have done without watching and WAY prefer the book. so much less traumatising

thoughts while reading
blurb:
To be irrevocably in love with a vampire is both fantasy and nightmare
girl really?? what does irrevocably even mean?
irrevocably: in a way that cannot be changed, reversed, or recovered.
ok...intense much??

p14:
"We're going away to Dartmouth together in the fall, Charlie," Edward reminded him. "I'd like to do that, well, the right way. It's how I was raised." He shrugged.
He wasn't exaggerating; they'd been big on old-fashioned morals during World War I.
Charlie's mouth twisted to the side. Looking for an angle to argue from. But what could he say? I'd prefer you to live in sin first? He was a dad; his hands were tied.

p38: i think girlie needs to get over her inferiority complex a bit
p89: i mean to be fair i probably wouldn't wanna sleep with someone anytime in the near future if i'd bruised them that much either

p169: gosh the names jacob calls vampires really are abundantly more hilarious in the book than the films! for example:
He nodded and held out his stone cold hand.
Swallowing my disgust, I reached out to take his hand. My fingers closed around the rock, and I shook it once."

p170: and the titles in jacob's section! my personal favourite so far; Why Didn't I Just Walk Away? Oh Right, Because I'm An Idiot
p269: honestly putting jacob's food in a dog bowl is snarky but kinda iconic
p302: favourite chapter titles, pt 2: What Do I Look Like? The Wizard of Oz? You Need A Brain? You Need A Heart? Go Ahead. Take Mine. Take Everything I Have.
p428: oh gosh,
renesmee's irritation with bella pouncing on jacob
is just hilarious! girlie pop is so much cuter than she is in the film

p567: fourth wall moment
Of course, Jacob got more surly with each new addition. He kept his distance when he could, and when he couldn't he grumbled to
Renesmee
that someone was going to have to provide an index if anyone expected him to keep all the new bloodsuckers' names straight.*

Reread the whole series in 2024 for a podcast. This is definitely the most enjoyable one, but only because it is so buckwild. You all know the drill- writing is bad, messaging is bad, romance is upsetting, and yes, the treatment of the Quilluete tribe is racist.

For any adults who read the series as a teen and are considering a reread: fun for the nostalgia and deconstructing (if you're into that), but you'll probably have more fun getting somebody whose never watched the movies to watch them with you.

For teens who are thinking about reading the series: there's better stuff out there that doesn't have the issues this series has.

For adults who read the series as an adult and are still into it.... You do you I guess.
