I really did this book a disservice by putting it down for a few months, but it was a satisfying end to a series I really loved. This book was both expansive and a little crowded, which made it hard to pick back up after a long while.

I really enjoyed the first two books in this trilogy, but this one dragged a bit for me. I just never connected with the story, I think. I still think Jemisin is one of the strongest new voices in SF/F.

My main take-away from this series? Deep appreciation for the monumental leap in thoughtfulness and sheer narrative skill Jemisin took between this initial foray and the Broken Earth Trilogy. Interesting enough to keep me reading, but it read more like an uneven YA series. I'm glad I read the Broken Earth first, or I probably wouldn't have read anything else of hers.

4.5 stars, tbh. Maybe 4 if Im comparing to the other books in this trilogy, or if Im rating on what I *wanted* to happen but I couldn’t stop so it gets 5 stars. I had no expectations of this book, as the first two books could have been stand-alone books and had different main characters. This one is written from Sieh, the boy-trickster-god’s point of view. It is sweet, sad, and funny in parts. There is more in-depth description of the true nature of gods and godlings which I guess is the premise here. I just loved all three books, separate or alone.
