This novel is in the perspective of Ella and Molly. The story told In two different time frames. Ella, is a PhD student from a wealthy family who has been beaten up by the police in a protest. Middle aged Molly Molly is the seasoned long term activist, who earned her stripes at Greenham Common.. The relationship between the two women gives you the mother-daughter dynamic which I enjoyed. Then there is a death. A man is killed, left in a lift shaft. Only Molly and Ella know what happened. But Molly begins to suspect that Ella has not been truthful about what happened and their relationship begins to falter. As the drama unfolds
both women have to deal with the repercussions of this terrible event. This incident leads to a web of lies, deceit and murder. Who can be trusted?

Beautifully written and so clever I enjoyed this book from front to back. Thanks to NetGalley and everyone involved.

Great read with some twisty turns, though the ending was a bit on the trite side. Great texture and atmosphere.

"One day the front of the place is going to collapse. Leaving us all exposed in our flats like the world's grimmest doll's house. Most rooms abandoned and sad and the little figures inside so forlorn. We've been played with too much. We're almost broken."

This book has a very unique story with interesting characters, but it got very slow in the middle. It may have been just a little too long for the story that was being told. The chronology was a little bit confusing at times, but it was a creative way to write the story. I figured out the ending before it was revealed, but that's okay. I liked it overall, and I would read another book from Eva Dolan.

Probably more 3.5 than 4 stars.
I liked the writing style, but I found the start quite slow and I predicted one of the major plot twists about half way through.

Interesting premise and I liked the slow excavation of the character of Ella. The pacing didn't pick up until the end though, so I can see some people thinking this is a bit slow.

Ella is a wellknown urban activist squatting in a block of flats scheduled for demolition. One evening suring a celebratory party she goes back to her flat and finds a dead man lying there. She doesn't call the police or an ambulance but allows herself to be persuaded by her friend Molly to dispose of the body in another part of the building. As time goes on Ella is wracked with guilt and also paranoia, is Molly the good friend she seems?

Having read some of Dolan's previous work, the Zadig and Voltaire series, I was already disposed to enjoy this book. However I could not engage with it.

After attending a party Ella finds herself alone with a dead man. Unsure of what to do, she calls her best friend Molly. Ella tells Molly that the man attacked her and she accidentally killed him while defending herself. Molly does not want the police involved so she helps Ella by hiding the body in an abandoned building. But ultimately the two friends start to question each other's motives and they do not trust each other.

This story is told from Ella and Molly’s point of views with alternating timelines.

Wow! This is a superbly twisted and suspenseful psychological thriller. My jaw almost hit the floor after reading this one. I loved the complex characters and the strong plotline. Not only is this a fantastic thriller but it is a social commentary on activism. Eve Dolan is a brilliant writer and I look forward to reading more of her work.

I highly recommend this book to all psychological thriller fans! This book would be perfect for fans of Alice Feeney and Mary Kubica. Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc in exchange for an honest review!
