Jane Charlotte Danes has recently endured one of the most heartbreaking events a lady can experience: the man she loves, Matthew Cleaves married another lady.
Jane was forced to pick herself up and carry on in the same village as squire Matthew and his wife Elizabeth.

Two years later, Elizabeth runs off with her lover leaving Matthew humiliated and the object of gossip in the ton. Jane was torn because she wants Matthew but not at they expense of her reputation. Elizabeth didn't divorce Matthew so Jane doesn't want to be a mistress. She's also afraid the ton would assume she is the reason Mathew filed for divorce instead of fighting to reclaim Elizabeth. But what matters most is what is in Matthew's heart? Why did he marry Elizaebth? Is Jane 2nd choice because he was discarded? No one wants to be a consolation prize.

Jane and Matthew had to navigate these issues as well as the minefield known as the ton before they could finally be together. It wasn't smooth and there was a good amount of miscommunication.
This love story didn't feel passionate to me. Jane and Matthew didn't have that chemistry I expect in this kind of HR. I also found the writing a little bumpy. I liked the premise but the execution didn't lend to feeling a connection with the hero or heroine. I like Jane's independent spirit but she just wasn't memorable.

I was satisfied with the ending as love prevailed and I was happy that both Jane and Matthew finally got their happily ever after.
