Sadly surprised that I didn't vibe with this collection! The short stories contained strong emotional themes; longing to be in someone else's present, the faraway fantasy lands we create in times of loneliness etc. But, mostly, the stories themselves didn't hold much meat on the bone for me. The Man on the Stairs and This Person were the two I did enjoy.

I read this collection almost 4 months ago and still think about it (negatively, make of that what you will).

I’ve seen blurbs and other reviews that have called this “laugh out loud funny”, “tender”, “sexy”, and “feel-good” and I feel like we didn’t read the same book?

Please read the content warnings first, do not go into this blind thinking it’s a book of sweet or heartwarming stories.

Incest and pedophilia are common themes. Maybe the moral responsibility is on the reader? Because I didn’t feel judgement reflected in the characters/narrators or author. If so, that did not make this book “quirky” for me.

It felt like I was playing a game of Cards Against Humanity, and Miranda July is that player who puts down the extra inappropriate card just to watch another player have to read it out loud.

Two stars because a lot of the writing is actually really beautiful, out of context.

I enjoyed the voice and storytelling aspect of this book, but the subject matter of most of the short stories was challenging to get through. I wouldn’t recommend, necessarily, but I don’t regret reading it.

“We had loved people we really shouldn’t have loved and then married other people in order to forget our impossible loves, or we had once called out hello into the cauldron of the world and then run away before anyone could respond.
Always running and always wanting to go back but always being further and further away until, finally, it was just a scene in a movie where a girl says hello into the cauldron of the world and you are just a woman watching the movie with her husband on the couch and his legs are across your lap and you have to go to the bathroom.”

Bleak. Weirdly sexual throughout, like way more than I would have guessed. Complex representations of queer attraction but few people are actually gay? Some moments of interesting prose, but it was ultimately a chore to finish. I don’t think I will find myself looking back on these stories much, but maybe they’ll take on more interest in hindsight? I wonder if I just don’t “get it”… there were moments of resonance, but it overall felt mostly flat, to me
