I looooved it. So intelligently creative. July’s ability to let her mind wander and follow it there without regard for embarrassment or fear is admirable. Got me into stories & I loved it a lot! Always grateful for admittance of WEIRD

2 hours 12 minutes - I have very mixed feelings about this short story collection. Firstly, I think the title perfectly encapsulates the common theme all the stories share - loneliness, and the plight for connection. As is common with short stories, some stood out to me far more than others. July's writing style was consistently good, and most of the stories seemed reflective of something, but some of the details were very strange to me. Some of the attitudes towards heavy topics irked me slightly.

Not bad exactly, it does make you feel uncomfortable though.

Overall, I think this is a good read, but I admit I had higher hopes. I understand that even short stories about different characters should still be intertwined in some way and these were--through themes of loneliness, betrayal, sex, etc.--but I sometimes felt like I was reading about the same character, just in a different story. Much of the language was really beautiful and some of it...well, I felt like she was trying too hard. I still think this is worth a read; I'm just not sure it would be on my personal "best of 2007" list.

This WAS random. I had the same reaction as Yvonne. I like the way July writes, her non-punctuation actually made sense to me. It wasn't as intrusive as Cormac McCarthy's in "The Road," which drove me batty all the way through the book.

I really could have done without the mental image from the lady's dream in "Majesty." Forever. lol

Overall it was alright. I didn't like it at all for about the first half of the book, but it redeemed itself somewhat toward the end.

Things are delicate. Like the virgin removal of the thin film covering a butter block before searing a plot of bacon on a Sunday morning while your wife sleeps in the next door room, everything clicking and wafting through the home, that all too familiar aroma of love and hunger. If only there were an easy way to remove it without your hands instantly covered in grease and lard.

Yes, things are delicate. And sometimes we break them on purpose. Other times on accident. Other times with no thought given or recognition allowed. Are we dependent on this and so much more?

So we break our hearts into thousands of little parts with no place to bury. In the earth, that final entrance and exit, everyone is the same. The coffins of the next life proclaiming that yes indeed, no one belongs here more than you.
