Urgh, save me from mediocre men who accidentally get everything and still manage to screw it up. It's supposed to be a humourous satire of academic life, but honestly I hate the whole lot of them, especially Jim who drinks too much, smokes too much and makes things worse by being a bloody coward. And of course he gets his completely undeserved happy ever after.
At best it has some lightly humourous moments, the rest of the time I wanted to punch them all.

For the funniest novel ever written there really weren't many laughs to be had. In fact, other then the burned sheets I don't think I laughed at all. And the characters were all awful people with not a single redeeming feature.
Maybe you need to be an academic to get it?

It's about a guy exchanging an ugly woman who won't put out for an attractive one who might.

That perfect description of a hangover is worth three stars all by itself. I'm also beginning to think that I'm cultivating a taste for the very specific sub-genre of 'humorous literature in academic settings'.

I think I read an abridged version of the book but I really enjoyed its British wit and the silly little tale of this little closed-off utterly bizarre world of 1960s English academia. I think I'd read it again if I found an extended version.

Most Favorite book ever--Funny, scathing, brilliant send-up of Post WWII England. I re-read every year since 1976.
