Was quite hard to get into for some reason, although the writing itself was masterful. Felt like it could have been a bit shorter. Overall - good book, not my cup of tea.

Tbh this could have been at least 200 pages shorter.

Middlegame
Seanan McGuire

⭐️⭐️🌟

🔥 Over my head, too smart for me! Or too abstract
🤚 Main characters named Roger & Dodger
🔥 Lab-created Frankenstein-esque twins separated at birth
🤚 2 parts of one whole Doctrine
🔥 Wtf is the doctrine? Wtf is the Improbable Road? Impossible City?
🤚 Wizard of Oz references
🔥 Math and language
🤚 “Your mother’s blood tasted like candy, little girl. Don’t fuck with me. Come home.”

Seanan McGuire is truly a master at work. Might even call her Asphodel Baker.

What a book. This is the third "world" I've read by this author and they've all been so different. From pulpy long series, to short stories, to this standalone gem. It reminded me a little of The Magicians, except the protagonists aren't insufferable dicks. Such a well crafted plot that was never too confusing when it really should have been. Roger and Dodger are interesting and unique in spite of being literal archetypes. It would be exhausting if every book I read was this good.
