 Read July 2023
(Reread) Gremlins meets Sea Monkeys. I won’t claim it’s one of Stine’s best but honestly, this was fun!

Fear Street # 56

Scott Adams, not that one, is tired of not having any stories to tell. He's lived near Fear Street his whole life and he doesn't have any stories about hide and seek with ghosts or shape-shifting monsters. He decides the answer is getting his buddy Glen to lend him the money for Aqua Apes. When the Sea Monkeys, er--Aqua Apes, arrive in the mail he's a little disappointed. There's a tiny glass tank with a light, a packet of crystalized apes and some ape food. Lacking distilled water they decide to fill the tank with water direct from Fear Lake! Scott might soon have a story to tell after all.

I'm not a fan of this one. 'Hide and Shriek' hinted at a world of Shadyside where the adults are complicit in the supernatural threats the kids face. It was a little spooky. This is a bunch of hijinks as Scott, and sometimes Glen, scramble to keep the Aqua Ape secret from Scott's parents or attempt to ineffectually prove the Ape's existence after damage is done. Also, note there was only one Aqua Ape and he didn't get that big. I was expecting something a little more high stakes then getting grounded. Scott should have had a little more retribution for deliberately wanting something bad to happen to him so he could brag to his friends on the playground.
