A mixture of being older than when I first read the series and a degradation of the quality of plot and character development. Maybe if I was younger I could have bought the romance between Ludo and Laura, but maybe I'm also selling my younger self short.
There is NO development of their relationship to explain why they're suddenly in love after meeting only twice - both meetings were short and nothing happened for them to feel this way. It could have been changed to just being attracted to each other, but I'm guessing something happens later on in the book that I did not read and they needed to love each other for that to be believable.
