A beautiful, powerful, and very sad, short novel. Very evocative of the British rural life I grew up with - less jolly squires and straw sucking farmers, more hard-fought agriculture and bloodsports.

i loved the foil of the sheep farmer vs the badger baiter. i'm not 100% sure what happened at the end of the book before the epilogue? i might reread just that section but i did not absorb it at all. i thought it had a lot to say about how people treat animals says a lot about how they feel about other people.
