Brilliant.

The artwork scattered through the novel is great; I do wish there had been more.

The action keeps the book moving and the pacing makes for a smooth, comfortable read. The pressure of expectations (both bad and good) is definitely a significant secondary theme, in addition to the timely thread about which books get prioritized and which get challenged.

And I really liked the way the storyline with the nerdy classmate was not-entirely-resolved.

Super power+ social issues in a modern context! I enjoyed the reading. There's a lot to unpack in the combination of traditional texts, poems, and images!

Through beautiful and funny and reflective poetry, Reynolds explored and empowered Miles to take agency and respect in spite of the “master’s tools” being used against him (tw: humiliation, power plays, detention, prejudice). This isn’t really about Spider-Man being a hero, but about Miles learning to be a hero against a racist system that is infested and rotting. Reynolds also touches the topic of book bans in an interesting way! Highly recommend this book that shows a another side of Miles.

How do you talk about book banning in such an enriching and engaging way.  Jason Reynolds manages to mix poetry, prose, and a complex emotional narrative in a superhero guise.  I loved this book and read it so quickly.
