This book genuinely broke my brain. The plot twists at the end?? They hit you like a TRUCK. I had CHILLS in the reveal. 10/10 book, I WISH I could re-read it for the first time again.

SPOILERS!Ā
Yā€™all I cannot! This book is actually so good.
The plot twist was pretty good, considering we thought it was one
murderer who killed Sal and Andie, but it was actually two (kinda). I canā€™t believe Caraā€™s dad killed Sal, but in some deranged way it made sense. And Andieā€™s death? BY HER OWN SISTER? Technically it wasnā€™t premeditated because her sister was dying and she left her there, but she did hide the body. And to think it hadnā€™t been found after 5 years, she did a good job.

BUTā€¦ thereā€™s one thing I cannot forgive.
BARNEY. WHY DID HE HAVE TO DIE? It wasnā€™t necessary.
My heart was broken.

Such a great mystery! I was hooked from the beginning by the vibe of the writing, the setting, and the characters. And I really loved Pip and Ravi as characters, separately but especially together.

ā€œIn the end, this was a story about people and their different shades of desperation, crashing up against each other.ā€

I loved this.Ā

I started it yesterday and read until late and woke up this morning and read until I finished. I was hooked.Ā

I had started to read the e-book but I gotta be honest, Pippa's quirkiness was not coming across well and I couldn't connect but then decided to go with the audio and it brings her and the story across much better for me. I could then go between audio and e-book easily because starting with audio helped me connect with the story.Ā

This is a whodunnit so there's no point in me trying to give a summary lol but here's some of my thoughts:Ā

- I watched every season of Pretty Little Liars and also read some of the books, I can suspend belief lol. Well, of the author makes it easy to and she did. Other books could have me rolling my eyes and saying "really?!" out loud. A lot. But I was completely in with this bookĀ

- The author writes quirky characters and I just think it's kind of hard to get that across. I think a lot of us would know a Victor in our lives but I think with reading a book it's different and he often read as a caricature. Other than his OTT Dad-nessĀ I didn't get a feel for him and this was the same for some other characters.

- Pippa definitely made some *questionable* decisions. But I also think it was in line with who she was. She's determined and can get focused on a singular thing or outcome and well, let's just say at times she was stressing me out. Not in an annoying way but in a more "girl, please no" kinda way lol.

- The author fucked with my emotions. Well and truly. Firstly, there's a certain choice she made and whyyyyy.Ā

- There's specifically one character who I just felt well and truly sad for. Even now after finishing it I can't shake it. It makes me sad to my core. He deserved more and part of me wished the author would make us suspend disbelief a little more and have changed his outcome. He deserved better. *cries*Ā

- I really liked Ravi and Pip's dynamic. But I also love that their romance was very understated and wasn't exactly happening while they were trying to solve the case. Even as a romance reader primarily, I hate when the story gets lost because of a romance but thankfully that's not what happened here.Ā

- If I had to complain about anything it would be that when I take a step back it's that the characters were lacking in depth and development essentially. Yes even Ravi and Pip, even though I liked them, I didn't really *feel* the connection between them and it was the same with the different friendships and connections. It's not to say I didn't like them but just they were ok. Also the killer... and that confrontation. Hmm I'm not sure. They seemed like someone who was desperate enough to do what they had done but that confrontation seemed lack luster perhaps? But anyways I still enjoyed it greatly.Ā

- Also also, we get the story through Pip's point of view which I was fine with actually, however, on the audio side of things, when we were getting the interviews, we got to hear the different voices from different narrators and I think what a waste not to use that consistently through. Especially the narrator for Ravi. I just think when a story is narrated with a full cast it just really brings the story to life and with this story it's not like the other narrators weren't there they were just used sparingly which I think is a pity. Because with the interviews and log entries especially in the audio really brought the story alive in a cool way.Ā

So, basically I wouldn't go into this with a hope for deep connection and character development because I do think that was kinda bland and lacking. But for me, I loved the story itself, the excitement with catching up to the killer and understanding all the threads of Andie Bell and those connected to her, honestly my anxiety had anxiety lol. But I enjoyed this thoroughly.

It could have been an easy 5āļø read, but
they killed Barney off
and I think it was unnecessary.Ā

This was the closest I've ever got to that feeling of playing Nancy Drew games as a kid.
