The story of Kya, a young girl who is abandoned and raised herself in the marshes, is a powerful and compelling tale. The author’s words bring the beauty of Kya’s world to life and leave you feeling as if you are living in nature with her. The tale is dark and splits between Kya’s past and childhood and the current issue she is faced with, the accusation of murdering a local man. The book is detailed and builds Kya’s world for the reader to fall into. This is a coming of age story, a story of survival and perseverance, a romance with a touch of mystery.

I found this a little slow to get into, but as soon as I did, from around a third of the way through, it was very gripping. Brilliantly written throughout, with a beautiful picture of the marsh created and lovely biological details particularly in the latter half, it was original and enjoyable to read. Mystery was also interesting and kept me guessing until the last page. 4.5 stars
