This book is amazing. However, the author is problematic. There is a lot of controversy around her regarding racism and potential murder. I recommend getting this book second hand and also being mindful and doing some research on Delia Owens before reading or buying. However the book itself is beautifully written, the characters are developed and complex. The writing is honestly just wonderful and the story is dark and real and engaging though jt is slow for the first hundred or so pages. Spoiler ahead!
Spoilershe is accused of murder just like Kya and it’s suspicious that Kya admits to murder via a poem and hides it away, gets away with it and perhaps this book was Delia’s own confession?

The book was elaborate and a slow read, it took me some time to actually get myself to finish the book however it was descriptively and beautifully written. This wasn't like any other murder mystery I had ever read, it was expressive and highlighted a lot about nature and that gave a backstory to how the murder was actually covered up. The ending was exquisite and Delia Owens delicately eneded the book in a way that made me go back and re-read parts of the book that made more sense now that I had finished the book.

A beautifully written and cultivated book.  The writing is incredible and the way the author lures you in with a permanent backdrop of nature and unique characterisation is brilliant.  However, plot-wise, this book just wasn't  my cup of tea.  I recommend this to anyone who wants a nature-filled story with a murder mystery subplot and a large focus on coming-of-age drama.

The entire time I read this book, I was sad, happy and angry all at the same time as learning educational things through Kya’s love for the marsh. I read this book within 3 days because I could not put it down. And when I did put it down, I couldn’t wait to pick it back up again.
I truly thought I knew who the murderer was but I was so shocked at the last few pages. This was an incredible story about love, acceptance, difference and the harsh realities of the natural order of everything and every living species.
I cannot wait to see the movie after reading this! Highly recommend.
