At first it was slow so I didn’t think I would like it to much. But as it went I fell more connected to the characters. It feels like poetry.

This story is told in alternative perspectives of the past and future (I read this on audio and it took a minute to figure that out).
It was slow moving at first, but once our main character got older it found its rhythm.
The death of Chase and the subsequent trial of Kya was interesting to see unfold and I spent the whole time wondering if she was guilty, did someone else kill Chase, did he just trip, and a few other theories as to what happened.
Spoiler the ending lost it for me. Like I’m all for kya being the murderer but it just did not have the impact it could have on me. It took so long to get to the conclusion after the court case I was just like “just tell me who killed chase already!” “Don’t let me read this whole book just to forget about the main plot point”. By the time we found out who killed chase I was mentally over it that it didn’t reach the impact it could’ve had

Pretty good book. It wasn't the best book I have ever read in my life but the story was interesting and I did want to see how it ended.

I thought I would dislike this book when I first starting reading. I did not like the imagery and it made me uncomfortable. I don't like marsh, mud, humidity, etc. I do like boats and the water, but not that area of the water. I am so glad that I kept reading. To say that the setting grew on me is an understatement, I yearn for it now. This novel is absolutely incredible! Fantastic. I saw the ending coming but was so engrossed that I forgot the prediction, so it still hit me hard. I enjoy the mix of introspection and slice of life and murder investigation/trial. There is something that I think would have tied things together better, which makes this just shy of 5 stars. That being said, this book is much closer to 5 stars than 4.
