This is such a lovely little book that I think can appeal to all ages. It is meant to be a children’s book, but I loved it as an adult and would gift this to other readers and lovers of language. What a Wonderful Word highlights words from around the world that do not have direct translations. For instance, Gluggavedur is an Icelandic word that means, “weather that looks beautiful while you’re inside, but is much too cold when you step outside.” Little facts about the country of origin are also sprinkled throughout which I thought was fun and interesting. And to top it all off, the illustrations are gorgeous. All in all, I think this is a lovely little book that I will be gifting over and over again.

This is such a charming and intriguing book, which introduces the reader to some fantastic words from many different languages that do not have a direct translation. Every word is associated with a stunning, colourful illustration which appeals to both children and adults alike, and there are also three fascinating facts which relate to the culture, language or idea represented by the word. Moreover, there is a pronunciation guide at the end of the book which gives a rough idea of how each word should be uttered, although, as the author states, explaining pronunciation in writing can be difficult, because it cannot explain pitch and tone. Nevertheless, this is a brilliant introduction to words from different languages which would appeal to logophiles and polyglots of all ages.

Actually read the French version "En un mot" but couldn't find this edition in the book details. But it's a wonderful kids book that explains and illustrates more than 25 words in different languages that are unique and have no equivalent in other languages, like "wanderlust" in german/english or Cafuné in Brazilian Portuguese. Quite a fascinating, adorable and calming read with gorgeous illustrations.

This book offers examples of untranslatable words from around the world. These are words that some cultures can use just one word to capture but in other languages it takes entire sentences to explain them. The words come from all over the globe, and while some may be familiar others are entirely surprising and fascinating. Perhaps the most interesting part is how these unique words offer a glimpse into the culture they come from. The illustrations of the book are show places and people around the world acting out each word. They are bright and friendly. The text offers the word, a definition and then additional information on where it comes from. Enjoy exploring words like nakama, tartle and gluggavedur! Appropriate for ages 8-11.
