Cry of Gold by Kari Holloway is book two in her Devil's Playground series. In this book we are introduced to Alex and her partner, Mira. They are Guardians who work for the council. They are called in to investigate some artifacts that are being stolen. The thing is that despite the security cameras no one can figure out who or what is doing the stealing. All that the cameras record is a blur of bright light that comes in and steals certain artifacts. Following the clues and digging deeper will bring them to the suspects but along the way Alex will find herself contending with a few things that she really wasn't expecting to be dealing with.
Cry of Gold is the first book that I have read by Kari Holloway but it was a story that I found myself enjoying and becoming very much engaged in. Alex is a kitsune, fox shifter with strong magic, she's coming into her element and needs training but where she needs to go she's not ready yet. She is the main focus of the story and an enjoyable character. I really like her partner, Mira, because she's cute and fun. There a variety of creatures in this book and I really enjoy that about this story. There is an element of mystery as they work to figure out what is stealing the items. It is definitely a nice surprise learning what it is.
There really isn't anything that I don't like about this story. It is a short read, which I liked on one hand but then I wanted more at the end. I know that I would love to read more about this character and her story in the future if it is not continued in the next book. This is a very engaging book and I will be keeping up with this author in the future.
Cry of Gold is a quick, light read and very well done. You get the whole story but it leaves you wanting more. There is no graphic language, violence or sexual situations so for those who are looking for a good clean read this book will be one you want to pick up and check out.
I received a copy of this book for review.

Cry of Gold
I was provided a free copy in exchange for an honest review. Cry of Gold is the second book of a series, but I hadn't read the first. I wish that I had, as I was a bit confused at times. I did enjoy the book and the story was interesting. It is a very quick read, I finished in under 2 hours. I would have liked a bit more character development and action tho. Overall, the writing was enjoyable and I plan to read the first book and look forward to seeing more from this author.
