Alright, so this was.. fine?
This is an incredibly hyped thriller at the moment (at least where I work it is) and it's definitely not bad, but I just have a very weird relationship with thrillers. They.. just bore me? Which is ridiculous, I know.
I think this is a very good historical novel, the time period was BRUTAL and the portrayal was done exceptionally well. Almost too well, because nothing good really happens to ANY characters. Which can be a little depressing at times..
It definitely kept me interested in the plot and I really liked the two main characters (the 'investigators'), but all in all it was kinda forgettable and I often had the impression that all the horrible things just happened because of shock value.

Trigger Warnings:
This book has.. pretty much everything?
It has (child) rape, abuse, murder, graphic descriptions of amputations, torture and eating of human excrement (yes... a lot of faeces in general.. ). So, please be warned.

Enormous storytelling with a colorful prose that immerses the reader into the swedish historical period the title refers to and where a terrible crime happened. A number of protagonists are the elements that paint the picture of this story, which shines through their experiences dealing with what wronged them and how their lifes changed in the process. Some of their names will stay in the memory for a long time, not all of them for the best reasons.

Yes, as others have warned, the crime at the center of the novel is violent, and the author doesn't shy away from its description. But is this crime the worst violence we see in this world? For the poor, the sick, for women and children, life in 1793 Europe was not safe. And most of the violence was baked into society, through norms and the selfish blindness of those in power. I think that's what the author wants us to think about.

I read this book because Fredrik Backman suggested it. It is totally my fault for not looking more into it before reading but I was expecting something similar to his books. It was not at all what I was expecting. Again, that was my fault. I don’t regret reading it but I it is much darker than I had expected.
