Yuck. Clunky dialogue, lots of gore, no characters to like - or even enthusiastically root against. A waste of time.

I was sad there was no development with mike and alex. And that it was about alex being the subject of the investigation. I get frustrated with the good guys get treated like the bad guys.

This book was a disappointment. I was determined to finish it just for the sake of finishing it and returning it to the library in a prompt manner. I don't think I can get into it without spoilers, so I'm not going to. Let me just say that the two main characters make some bad decisions.

I have liked this series less with the last few books because Alex seems so whiny and very different than the strong prosecutors that she was in the earlier books. So, I decided to listened to the audiobook for Deadfall and also read part of the ebook. The audiobook reader makes Alex sound very whiny, which is not how I “hear” her when I read the text myself. So, while there are still some less than believable aspects of Deadfall (who allows themselves to be questioned w/o attorney representation or whatever happened to the Det. Stern?), I’m hanging onto this series,

Deadfall is the latest instalment in Alexandra Cooper series. It is good. A lot happens. As per usual we get the history of hidden or unknown but fascinating locations in New York. Linda Fairstein writes well. All the main characters are still here. But... It's not as good as it could have been. It feels like the series is getting a bit tired, there's a lack of direction. I just hope that the next book will bring changes much needed to keep Cooper's books strong and interesting. I want the old Alex back. If you're a fan of those books, Deadfall is definitely worth reading, just don't expect too much.

Between the difficult subject matter (hunting) and what I felt was a convoluted plot, Deadfall is my least favorite Alex Cooper novel to date.

I'm sad to say that I have to abandon this book only partially read. In fact, I have to abandon this series after reading every book before this one, though I have to admit that the last few have not been as enjoyable for me. Rather than evolving and growing, Alex Cooper seems to have regressed. She is no longer smart, tough and capable and is now whiny and annoying. Ouch.

Meh that was boring and Alex is irritating. I thought for sure one dealing with the murder of Paul Battaglia would be interesting especially given how acrimonious the relationship between him and Alex had become but nope. Dull, dull, dull. At least this time Alex and Mike didn’t spend all their time being hateful to one another. No more for me in this series.

As always, even at 19th in the series, Fairstein creates an enticing mystery complete with an uncommon history lesson of the inner workings of NYC. Many of the novels in the series can be read out of order or as a starting place but not this one. To fully understand Deadfall one must first read its predecessor, Killer Look.
