CW: Mental illness, Spoilersuicide
I read this book for the first time in fall of 2018, before I started using Goodreads for real. So, I thought back to the book and said, "No, I must be over-hyping it in my mind. I should give it four stars."
Well, no. I was wrong. This book deserves its five stars. This book should revel in its rating.

I'm a sci-fi/fantasy girl most of the time. Maybe some ghosts, a bit of a gothic mystery, that kind of thing. I rarely read contemporary fiction and even less often do I enjoy it. But this beautiful book... The details of Sean's life, told in a backwards fashion, folding inward to show the reader how point C came from B and A, are interspersed with passages from the RPG he runs via mail order subscription. It's a hard sci-fi game, a la Fallout, in a way, where players battle their way to a beacon of safety in an irradiated landscape of what remains of America.
This book speaks to me.
I love the narrative structure, I love the writing, and I love this weird, quiet, backwards story.
