This book is hard for me to review. I really enjoyed most of it and it had me sobbing at 2 AM, but I have issues with the way Elliot’s trauma was swept under the rug. He was clearly r*ped but even after learning what happened, Macy referred to it as cheating. I don’t understand why the author would have done this unless they themselves don’t understand the severity of the situation they wrote. Elliot was passed out drunk, unable to consent, and didn’t even know what had happened until someone told him several days later. And the author is trying to pass it off as “accidental cheating”?? It would have been a 4 star book if this plot line was better handled, but I just can’t get over it.

It’s not that I didn’t like it. I totally did. And… it feels like the Christina Lauren’s books all have very similar plots with miscommunication tropes. Elliot is an all time favorite book bf. I think the authors really didn’t address how <spoiler > Elliot was sexual assaulted by Emma. It was  was brushed off as a mistake. I would’ve liked more about him being supported too and less miscommunication tropes I love Elliot and Macy. If Macy had said half the things she thought during the “now” timeline, the book would’ve been half as long. Favorite word? You.

I don't really get very emotional when reading but then again my range of books thus far probably isn't a good gauge. This book made me cry (just once and towards the ending), I related so much to the protagonist's way of coping with trauma and I felt her pain and heartache so much.

I have to say though, this book is meant for all the romantics, wattpad lovers who have grown up (slightly).

I love how the book was written, jumping from past to present. It felt like the audience was being my kept in the loop while everything was unfolding and almost as thought he protagonist was living through them in between the other chapters.

Christina Lauren books are such a nice and enjoyable read with this one being set between the childhood sweethearts of Christina and Elliot. Even though it did give me serious the Summer I Turned Pretty Vibes it was cute seeing the frienship Christina and Elliot had originally built and then how they both instantly fell in love with each other all the years later. The added intrigue of what happened to tear them apart was good and I definelty didn't expect the tragic reason with her Dad. I wanted to see more about her relationship with her Dad and the one between her Dad and Mother too. I also feel the ending was too quick as there was a lot to unpack in the final few chapters.
