i recommend! its an easy read. its emotional, but with a hopeful tone and happy ending. the grief and parental loss is handled well. the main character’s adolescent, friends to lovers origin story is excellently done. you definitely feel the weight that them not being together has. the main character is multidimensional and has depth. finally, the side characters are also so endearing and charismatic.

All in all, this was an wonderful read.

This immediately became my favorite book. I adore Elliot & Macy so much.

I was enjoying the story until the reveal of the New Year’s Eve that separated Macy and Elliot.
There was no acknowledgment that Elliot was sexually assaulted. How that situation was treated and the characters’ responses to the event ruined the story for me - especially Elliot owning that night as his “mistake.” It felt like victim blaming. He should have been able to go to a party and drink and pass out in his friends bed without someone taking off his clothes and taking advantage of him thinking his girlfriend showed up. It was even more devastating to find that his “friends” did nothing to help him that night or to support him when he woke up confused the next morning. They told him nothing FOR DAYS - not until he is spiraling even further about Macy not answering his calls or texting him back.
I also don’t feel like like there was a growth arc for Macy. Her personality and defense mechanisms remain consistent through a story that spans 15 years. I guess there’s hope that she can grow with how the story ends, but at that point I was no longer invested.

This would have been a solidly 4 or 4.5 star book but man the last third really ruined it for me. The events behind the fallout between Elliott and Macy were just too much to come back from and I feel like Elliott's part wasn't really explored enough

Elliott was sexually assaulted, which is not explicitly stated (and therefore acknowledged imo by Macy) so there's no empathy or acknowledgement of *his* trauma. Macy's dad's death is so intrinsically tied to Elliott's "betrayal" I cannot believe that their relationship can so easily come back from that. Maybe I've never loved anyone that much but the end really left a sour taste in my mouth

The authors blatant refusal to address the sexual assault that occurred to the main characters is highly problematic.
