I held out for the plot to gain interest and the characters to develop but gave up. If this were the first Devney Perry I’d read I wouldn’t have read more of her work; I promise other series of hers are better.
🚩 This honestly reads like the relationship before the FMC gets out, goes to therapy, grows as a person and meets someone who deserves her. It reads like a verbally and psychologically abusive relationship but is billed as a HEA.
🚩 MMC was likely aiming to be protective/possessive/broody but was a walking red flag. He bullies the FMC from day one and 50% into the book she is yet to make a decision in their relationship. Examples: Due to misperception he bullies her from the moment she arrives in town. When ‘apologising’ for his behaviour he decides they are dating, despite her protest. He forces her to introduce her child to him then repeatedly uses the child to get his way, getting her to ‘side’ with him. He ignores instructions the FMC makes to parent her child, making those decisions himself. She constantly asked him to listen, he talks over her, ignores her, then calls her irrational and uses sex to distract her from the issue. He yells at her four year old daughter for no reason, then gaslights the FMC until she forgives him.
🚩 FMC constantly notes that she ain’t good enough for the MMC, calling herself weak for not standing up to him when he bullies her but continuing anyway.
🚩 MMC gets mad every time the FMC, or other characters, mention that he’s only with her for the house. But he basically moved himself in and built a shed for himself after one date so…

I actually hate both of these characters. Georgia is a naive pushover. She lets Jess walk all over her. Anytime she tries to stand up for herself, he just steamrolls her and "puts her in her place". Jess is a gaslighting, manipulative, controlling asshole. He forces her into a relationship and to introduce him to her daughter even though she said she wasn't ready. He constantly talks down to her and over her, makes decisions without her input, and has angry outbursts towards her and her daughter. He takes her places to "show her off" and "steak his claim" on her. Just gross.
The writing was clumsy and all over the place. There seemed to be a lot of drama that went nowhere. The "suspense" side plot was pretty predictable.
I am so disappointed. I love the Eden series. But this one was so full of misogynistic bullish, I almost DNFed it. I won't be continuing with this series.
