This was an okay book and I liked the characters, but there were certain things that almost knocked this down to two stars. Thing the first, a number of the love scenes are just shoe-horned into the narrative. In spite of that the author still managed to move the plot forward through these otherwise awkwardly placed scenes. Which is why I did not, in the end, knock off a star for it. Now we get to what I *did* knock a star off for. Which was primarily one scene where they dismiss the idea of horseless carriages and flight and blahdy blah. This book supposedly took place in 1884. The heroine is a school teacher and author. There is no WAY she would not have been aware of automobiles. Wisconsin held an automobile race in 1879. It wasn't a huge race, but this is something I would expect a schoolmarm to know. This book takes place during a time when automobiles were finally beginning to be seen as a viable option. As for aviation? Flying? DUDE, they had fucking hot air balloons in the civil war!! There were a few other things that struck me as inaccurate, but I don't know enough about them to be sure. This book seemed well-researched when it came to setting, so the inaccuracies were just even more glaring to me.
If you're not someone who gets REALLY bothered by tiny details like that, you'll probably really like this book. I would still recommend it, and I think I might try to read the next book at some point.
